Welcome to 1V!

September 26, 2019 5:22 pm - News

Hello! I am Ms. Giselle Villegas, one of the first grade teachers here at St. Emile. A very long time ago, I was a student at St. Emile School. Can you find my grade 8 grad photo?

It has been a very busy start to the new school year and I look forward to teaching my new batch of first graders!

Time Table

A Year In Grade 1V

Communication

Parents can communicate with me through student agendas or through emails, which I will try to check daily before school starts. The morning of a known late or absence should be called or emailed to the school office. Students will use their agendas to communicate information regarding upcoming events and due dates. The students will also have “Take Home” Folders that will contain Home Reading, Homework Logs, and other notes. Anything placed in the “Keep at Home” pocket stays at home and anything in the “Return to School” should be sent back to school. Please check agenda bags daily for homework, notes, etc.

Behaviour Expectations

The student agenda contains the St. Emile school handbook. Parents and students are required to read through the code of conduct together and sign the area acknowledging both are aware of school rules and consequences. Students will be expected to demonstrate respect to all within the classroom and outside the classroom. We will work together as a “family” and work through challenges in a kind, respectful manner.

Lunch and Snacks

Grade Five students monitor the class during lunch. They will assist in microwaving and opening lunches and monitor behaviour. I will play a movie or show at lunch on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Students will also have snack time around the first and last recesses. I encourage you to send healthy snacks for your child.

Daily Homework

Homework will include:

  • Review of spelling words to prepare for spelling test on Mondays.
  • Record home reading practice.
  • At Home math practice.
  • Unfinished class assignments

Religion

Students will engage in activities that will deepen the experience of belonging to God and the celebration of the Eucharist. They will be encouraged to follow in His ways and be teachers, showing love and kindness. We will discuss the experience and symbols of Communion and celebrate Church seasons/holidays. The students will also work through the Grade 1 student program in the Growing in Faith Growing in Christ website. The Pearson Canada program was developed by nationally recognized experts in catechesis, curriculum, and child development.

Mass is celebrated once a month at St. Emile church.

Language Arts

Students will be exposed to many activities to develop stronger writing skills, increase fluency and confidence in reading and writing. The year will incorporate weekly spelling tests, writing exercises, literacy centre activities, and home reading. Language skills will be used daily in many of the other classroom subjects. Students are to be registered with the Raz Kidz program. We will also have Reading Buddies and be partnered Ms. Hudson’s grade 4 class.

Science

The strands covered in the program are: Living Things, The Senses, Objects and Materials, and Daily and Seasonal Changes. Students will explore the curriculum with hands-on experimentation, research and live specimens! The students will also help in the care of our classroom pet, Rex, the bearded dragon.

Social Studies

The strands covered in the program are: I Belong, My Environment, and Connecting with Others. The students will explore and identify the groups they are a part of, the physical environments and communities they live in, and their relationships and roles with the people and communities around them.

The students will be exposed to activities that will develop sorting skills, develop measuring skills using standard and nonstandard measuring tools, develop larger pattern skills, develop stronger number sense, and understanding of place value. Mathletics is also a resource available for the students.

Art

The students will use various mediums and learn different techniques in creating art.
