Grade 2 Year at a Glance

Classroom Theme– The main theme for our classroom this year is Mindfulness. Mindfulness is the inception of compassion and consideration of others, which is learned through conversations and personal experiences or reflection. Being mindful of our own emotions as well as the emotions of others is a goal that we will strive to achieve this year. Students will have the opportunity to learn how to be mindful through various activities throughout the school year.

Math
In Math, we will be competing the following units:

  • Patterning
  • Numbers to 100 
  • Addition and Subtraction to 18
  • Measurement
  • Addition and Subtraction to 100
  • Geometry
  • Data Analysis

ELA
1. Explore thoughts, feelings and experiences 

2. Comprehend and respond personally and critically to literacy and media texts 

3. Manage ideas and information 

4. Enhance the clarity and artistry of communication 

Students will take part in many activities to accomplish the above goals: reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing and representing. Activities will include:

Reading:

  • Reading silently
  • Reading to a partner
  • Reading in small groups
  • Guided Reading groups
  • Home reading

Writing:

  • Students write in their journals weekly
  • We will be focusing on all different kinds of writing such as: stories, poems and journal writing
  • T.W.A.S will be completed every Friday, which stands for This Week At School. This is un-edited student work, which will be sent home to be signed.

Spelling

Each Monday, spelling words will be printed into the Spelling Scribbler to practice for the Spelling Test which will always be the following Monday. Throughout the week at school we will work on our spelling words. We will have spelling centers Wednesdays and Fridays.

Science

In Science, we will be completing the following units:

  • Growth and Changes in Animals
  • Solids, Liquids and Gases
  • Position and Motion
  • Air and Water in the Environment

Social Studies

In Social Studies, we will be completing the following units:

  • Our Local Community
  • Communities in Canada
  • The Canadian Community

Religion

In Religion, we will be completing the following units:

  • We Belong to God’s Family
  • The Road to Bethlehem
  • Jesus Guides Us
  • The Story of Lent and Easter
  • We are Blessed in Faith
